Prof. Zhang Dayu, one of the first academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a famous chemist and founder of the Chinese catalysis science, had been a professor and dean of Tsinghua University and National Southwestern Associated University, as well as the director of DICP. He proposed, for the first time in the world, the surface bonding theory in catalytic process in 1960. And under his great leadership, his research team discovered three new catalysts for ammonia synthesis process in 1965, which was a miracle discovery at that time. Prof. Zhang Dayu is honored as “the Grand Master” because he also devoted himself in the education of young scientists for decades and cultivated many genius physical chemists and outstanding academicians in China.
